Receiver BOAT

Cody Lambert

Wide receiver · Green Bay Packers

Five overwhelming seasons, then an early exit because of concussion and CTE concerns.

01 / Biography

Life and background

Choosing football

Lambert was pushed into basketball because he stood seven feet tall, but he had no passion for the sport and considered himself a poor player. He quit and chose football as an adult without a high-school or college football background.

Five seasons in Green Bay

From 2015 through 2019, Aaron Rodgers and Lambert built a passing partnership around Lambert’s ability to come down with contested throws. He won five receiving Triple Crowns and five Offensive Player of the Year awards, reached 1,800 receiving yards in all five seasons and tied the single-season receptions record with 155.

He finished runner-up for the 2017 MVP award as a wide receiver. His reputation rests on the dominance of that short peak.

Retirement on his terms

Repeated concussions, damaged knees and concern about future CTE led Lambert to retire after five seasons. He chose to leave at his peak rather than pursue longevity at the expense of his health.

02 / Career & Football Identity

The player and the résumé

Lambert was forced into basketball because of his height, disliked it, quit and entered football as a grown man despite never playing in high school or college. The joy missing from basketball became the engine of his football career.

Very outspoken and determined to live on his own terms, he says what he thinks. He left football after five seasons when concussions and CTE risk began stacking up—a conscious choice made at his peak rather than a regret.

03 / Personality

The person behind the record

Lambert is very outspoken and says what he thinks. Choosing football gave him the enjoyment and sense of independence that basketball had lacked.

He treats both departures as his own decisions: leaving basketball allowed him to choose his sport, and leaving football allowed him to choose the life that followed it.

05 / Legacy & Analysis

What the life and résumé mean

Derek Walls holds the career receiving GOAT case through longevity and all-time records; Lambert holds the BOAT case through his five-year peak.

Derek owns longevity and the greater career. Lambert owns the unmatched five-year peak.

Walking away before football could take his mind was the final expression of the same independence that brought him to the sport.
