Los Angeles won both regular-season meetings, 26–20 and 33–27. In the NFC Championship, the Rams led 30–24 as time expired. Tanner completed a Hail Mary touchdown pass to tie the game at 30–30. San Francisco converted the extra point to win 31–30 and advance to the Super Bowl. Tanner improved to 5–0 against Jaxson in the postseason.

The Hail Mary was Tanner’s third passing touchdown of the game.
