Pregame circumstances

Los Angeles entered as the defending Super Bowl champion and the NFC’s fifth seed. Jaxson Walls had served an eight-game suspension connected to the 2022 Bountygate controversy. The Rams started 2–6 without him, then won all nine of his regular-season starts to finish 11–6.

In those nine games, Walls completed 293 of 413 passes for 3,945 yards, 28 touchdowns and one interception, with a 71.0% completion rate and 122.6 passer rating. He shared the 2023 NFL MVP award with Lamar Jackson. The Rams were favored on the road against fourth-seeded Philadelphia.

TimeoutsTwo available · none used

After Philadelphia’s second punt following the Slay interception, the Rams began at their own 16-yard line. Walls used a no-huddle offense, moving the ball through multiple smaller gains rather than a single long completion. Los Angeles kept both timeouts throughout the drive.

On the final play, the snap was botched and the football hit the ground. Walls recovered it and scrambled eight yards into the end zone with 1:20 remaining. The touchdown gave the Rams their first lead, 21–16.

The final goal-line stand

Philadelphia received the ball with 1:12 remaining. Hurts attempted a deep pass to A.J. Brown, drawing a defensive pass interference penalty against Jordan Fuller. The 26-yard penalty moved the Eagles to the Rams’ 12-yard line. D’Andre Swift then rushed 11 yards to set up first-and-goal from the 1.

Swift took the next handoff. Aaron Donald met him behind the line and drove him backward; the official result was no gain, with Donald credited with a solo tackle. On second-and-goal, Hurts attempted a quarterback sneak. With 20 seconds remaining, Daxton Roads punched the ball loose and recovered it himself. The turnover ended Philadelphia’s final scoring opportunity.

Place in the 2023 championship run

The Blizzard Bowl became a defining game of Walls’ 2023 season. Los Angeles scored 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points despite his difficult passing performance and late interception. The winning no-huddle drive and loose-snap touchdown were followed by Donald’s stop and Roads’ forced fumble and recovery at the opposite goal line.

The Rams continued through the playoffs and defeated Cincinnati 37–26 in Super Bowl LVIII, securing their second consecutive championship.
