Childhood in Minneapolis

Thomas grew up in a stable, supportive household in Minneapolis. His humility came naturally; it was not a public persona or a response to hardship.

His dream school

Thomas chose LSU because it was his dream school. His college choice carried a personal attachment beyond the opportunity to develop as a quarterback.

Professional career

Thomas played for the Los Angeles Raiders from 1982 through 1989 and San Francisco from 1989 through 1990. He finished with 22,638 passing yards, 182 touchdowns, 100 interceptions and five Pro Bowl selections.

His own career was smaller than those of the descendants who later made the Walls name synonymous with quarterback greatness. His influence on the family extended beyond those numbers.

Marriage and fatherhood

Thomas married Nicole Walls. Mac Walls and Trever Walls are their sons, and Nicole is the mother of both.

Thomas led through example. His authentic, humble and team-first manner became the model Mac carried into his own life and career. Trever likewise grew up in a supportive household; the comparisons with Mac developed later.

Nicole Walls

Nicole was warm, patient and grounded, as well as confident, direct and independent. She and Thomas met through mutual friends. She enjoyed music and art.

Life after football

After his playing career, Thomas focused on family and private life. His later years did not center on building a public football role.

Death and legacy

Thomas died from old age on September 27, 2044, in Los Angeles, at 88. He remained the foundational father figure of the modern Walls dynasty: Mac and Trever’s father and Jaxson’s uncle.
