2122: a 31-team NFL

The Raiders’ expulsion left 31 NFL franchises for the 2122 season. The league continued with an odd number of teams while preparing an expansion franchise. Las Vegas did not play in 2122.

2123: the Utah Coyotes

Salt Lake City, Toronto and San Diego bid for the open franchise position. Salt Lake City’s proposal was judged strongest overall. Utah entered through an expansion draft in the 2123 offseason and began play that season, returning the NFL to 32 teams.

The Utah Coyotes (UC) play in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the AFC West alongside Denver, Kansas City and the Los Angeles Chargers. They are a completely new expansion franchise. Their history starts in 2123; they inherit no Raiders games, championships, appearances, records, statistics, identity or legacy. The Raiders remain a separate, defunct historical franchise.

Approved early history

The Coyotes acquired talent through the expansion draft and free agency. Damon Price signed with Utah after becoming a free agent following the Raiders’ dissolution; that personnel movement did not create franchise continuity.
